The Revelation- Ernest Hemingways A Farewell To Arms Essays
The Revelation- Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell To Arms The Revelation Ernest Hemingways WWI classic, A Farewell to Arms is a story of initiation in which the growth of the protagonist, Frederic Henry, is recounted. Frederic is initially a na?ve and unreflective boy who cannot grasp the meaning of the war in which he is so dedicated, nor the significance of his lovers predictions about his future. He cannot place himself amidst the turmoil that surrounds him and therefore, is unable to fully justify a world of death and destruction. Ultimately, his distinction between his failed relationship with Catherine Barkley and the devastation of the war allows him to mature and arrive at the resolution that the only thing one can be sure of in the course of life is death and personal obliteration (Phelan 54). In order to chronicle Frederics maturation, it is first necessary to understand his character; he is what critics label a Hemingway Code Hero. Indigenous to nearly all of Ernest Hemingways novels, the Hemingway man lives by one simple rule: Man the player is born; life the game will kill him (Rovit and Brenner 90). This man looks to derive meaning and dignity from his stale, directionless being. In Frederic Henrys case, the search for a system of values and morals is difficult because he is caught between two very socially defined extremes, love and war. He only gains knowledge through his direct experience with these two elements and through the indirect teachings of various characters in the novel (Waldhorn 68). It is suggested that Frederic must commit to a comfortable medium between the selflessness of the young priest and the egocentricity of Rinaldi. In the introductory chapters, Frederic is torn between spending his holiday in the cold, clear mountains of Abruzzi with the priests family, and taking his leave in the city, where most of his time would be spent at the dispose of taverns and institutions of prostitution. Frederic chooses to spend his time in the city rather than Abruzzi, although that is where he had wanted to go (Hemingway 13). Frederic realizes that there is a moral and religious way of life, which the priest represents, and he respects these values of the priest. He acknowledges the fact that the priest has a code to live by. On the other shoulder sits Rinaldi, the satisfied, self-assured surgeon with whom Frederic also tries to identify. Rinaldi seems fulfilled, but as the war progresses he falls into a world of despair and disease. Although he cannot see it, Rinaldi too closely resembles Frederics dilemma and therefore is unable to tutor him (Waldhorn 69-70). Tremendously significant, Frederic Henrys exchanges with the priest and Rinaldi play a strong role in his development because he is unable to solely identify with either of them. Frederics education is enhanced by his relationship with the English nurse, Catherine Barkley, as well. Originally, Catherine is nothing more than an object of sensual desire, but as the novel progresses, Catherine becomes symbolic of Frederics final resolution. At first Frederic views Catherine as a replacement for the boring prostitutes that he is accustomed to visiting. He takes advantage of her situation; Catherines fianc? has been killed in the war. I thought she was probably a little crazy. It was alright if she was. I did not care what I was getting into. I knew I did not love Catherine Barkley nor had any idea of loving her. This was a game, like bridge, in which you said things instead of playing cards. Like bridge you had to pretend you were playing for money or playing for some stakes. Nobody had mentioned what the stakes were. It was alright with me (Hemingway 30-31). Typical of an immature youth, Frederic blatantly takes advantage of Catherine. He does not, however, realize the extent of Catherines shrewdness. She commits herself absolutely to the affair only because she had not given her innocence to her deceased fianc? (Donaldson 60). Catherine possesses the one major insight that Frederic does not: death is the end of all existence. Frederic attaches himself to Catherine because he yearns for a sort of order. Having discovered the value of his relationship with Catherine, Frederic returns to the front, only to find

Hotels Cooling and Heating Systems
Hotels Cooling and Heating Systems Hotels operate 24 hours in a day serving guests and offering a variety of services. Guest rooms, kitchen, swimming pools, and retail outlets are facilities that are utilized throughout, day and night. With frequent room temperature changes, a heating or cooling system is essential in ensuring customersââ¬â¢ comfort and hotel profitability. Hotel owners find it appropriate to look for professional help when temperatures in hotel facilities become unfavorable. However, learning how the heating and cooling device works offers the best answer to the problem.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Hotels Cooling and Heating Systems specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In order to understand how the system operates, one must familiarize him or herself with the components of a hotel heating or cooling device (Eugene 56). Hotel Entrepreneurs are, as everyone else, obligated to learn how temperature regulator works. The first essentia l part of the system is the source of warmed or cooled air. It is the origin of all gases distributed within the system and in the rooms. The other part of the system is a channel called distributer. It offers a passage through which heated or cooled air is distributed within the hotel facilities. Another integral part of the cooling system is the control system. (Abraham 91).It monitors and regulates the cooling process. The energy distribution from the source is done through pipes and wires. The energy goes into radiators or heating panels, where it is eventually blown out. In some modern cases, heating and cooling devices use boilers for transferring heated water. In these unique systems, pipes are embedded on walls, ceiling boards, floors and other parts of the hotel rooms. Hot water in pipes embedded on house parts in turn; conventionally transfer the warmth to the surrounding atmosphere. The currents consequently warm air all around in the entire hotel atmosphere. Air condition er uses a related technology. When it is turned on, it starts by freezing the gas inside its coils, which in turn cools the entire room. The rooms are cooled directly from the unit, or in some cases, cooled air is channel to the facilities directly. Generally, modern methods being developed to blend the old heating and cooling method share basic maintenance principles with the old generation of systems heating.Heating pumps are used in many homes and hotels to save energy (Ibrahim 64). Air conditioners and heating systems use fuel to control room temperatures. They use oil, electricity, or the modern nuclear energy. It is interesting to note that the temperature-control device uses fuel to produce either heated air or cooled air. How this works is based on basic principles of science.Advertising Looking for essay on engineering? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Heated air moves from relatively hot ground to cool groun ds, as warm air rises upwards in a circular manner to replace cool air. The principle depends on conventional current flow, and it ensures continued supply of warm air in the entire hotel room during cold weather. On the other hand, Air Conditioners effectively use the same principle of current flow to remove hot air from hotel rooms. Heating pumps produces cool air that settles down-wards against the flow of warm air. Maintenance of heating and cooling systems is easy for any person with the knowledge of parts of the heating and cooling system and the skills on how to evaluate the machine parts, bearing in mind how they function (Butterworth 72). To begin with, efficient operation of the tool is one of the many ways of performing positive regular maintenance practices to uphold the operation status of the system. In case of operational problems with the unit, one needs to begin by checking all the three components of the system to discover the fault. The components to be checked ar e air source, distribution system, and thermostat and control unit. The skilled entrepreneur should check both the heater and air conditioner in case they are running. If they are operational, then the problem is at the source. The entrepreneur should then check if fuel supply is undisturbed. In case fuel supply is satisfactory, he must check the system; it may be faulty. As an alternative, if no technique yields positive results, an investigation into the control system should then reveal the fault. The control unit must be able to start the machine and stop it safely. If one is satisfied that control unit is well operation to start and keep the device working effectively, then the performance of power supply becomes questionable. A brief check into its operations will lead to an informed decision on the necessary step of action. Whatever the cause of trouble in the machine, an entrepreneur should start by employing the preliminary steps stated below to help in discovering the faul t. The first significant step to take is to confirm whether the unit receives power. This is done by evaluating fuse and circuit breakers to find out if they are already blown out due to overheating. Concurrently, switch on all power switches and make sure the thermostat is properly set. There may be secondary switches that need to be evaluated for prompt connection. It is also useful to evaluate if power supply setting are turned on and pilot light is well lit.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Hotels Cooling and Heating Systems specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Abraham, Heinemann. Rallying the Masses (1 January 1992) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Rallying the Masses (1 January 1992) - Essay Example f the Republic) This creative process will afford us great opportunities, which the people of Kazakhstan merit for sure, but we are also going to face great challenges, which Iââ¬â¢m sure the people of our country will rise to. One of the greatest opportunities that lie ahead and will directly result in peopleââ¬â¢s prosperity is the development of an independent republican economy based on the market principles. Kazakhstan is abound with natural resources ââ¬â uranium, chromium, copper, coal, iron, oil and natural gas (International Crisis Group, r.133) ââ¬â which, if managed properly, could provide a steady inflow of foreign currency and thus, along with our wheat, textiles, and livestock exports, to predetermine our success in the economic field. As to which way is the proper one such wealth to be managed, I vote for profit-orientated management, but with strong regard for the national interest. In that connection, what we need is to attract large foreign investments into the national economy, under strict governmental supervision, as well as to help the formation and growth of domestic private capital. Therefore, we are going to face some of the greatest ever challenges. First and most impor tant is the matter of stepping out of the centralized economical structure of the former Soviet Union, which matter should be carried to its logical conclusion with perseverance, as well as with a certain dose of cautiousness ââ¬â in order to be minimized the shock for the Republicââ¬â¢s economy, hence to protect the living standard of the people against collapse. In that train of thoughts, as major obstacles ought to be mentioned our exportsââ¬â¢ exclusive dependence on trade partners within the ex-Soviet Union, the vast distances between Kazakhstanââ¬â¢s coalfields and the European industrial centers, the existing infrastructural deficiencies, etc. Second and not less important is the process of privatization of many industries hitherto owned by the state. Second Language Acquisition - Essay Example Children respond according to their imagination. This way they are able to make a link between the country and the food. The teacher also speaks the adjectives and nouns loudly, for example, emphasizing on the word delicious. This makes the students grasp words and makes them learn how to use them in sentences. The teacher does not point out their mistakes; instead, she encourages them and repeats what every one of them speaks. She knows how to be lenient with non-native speakers. She involves all the children in the lesson and aims at making them participate actively so that they are able to think on their own and to recognize things and assign names to them. In short, the teacher uses interesting strategies to address the needs of non-native speaking English students by making use of the most modern technological tools like multimedia and by making the whole class participate in the learning process.

Give a topic - Essay Example the 19th century, slavery and slave trade, creation of institutions based on religious revolutions were just but a few of the things that brought about the formation of different cultures. European influence in the region may have prompted the adoption of Western culture, therefore; eroding the African culture and traditions (Shillington 764). This paper will examine the influence that came about as a result of the European movement in the African region, and how this influence shaped modern African society. The events that may have led to the interaction between the African and the European in the 14th to the mid-20th century may have been the finding of manââ¬â¢s first remains in the region of Tanganyika. It was during this time that expeditions were carried out by many of the European influences that came to Africa. It was the crusade by David Livingstone against the infamous slave trade that led to the discovery of some of the remains of man. Slave trade was common among the people in this region as there were bargains that were struck by Arab traders in the region in exchange for common goods and services. During the German invasion, local traditional structures were disregarded and eradicated (Shillington 879). The same thing was happening in the neighboring East African region, Kenya, where the British had taken control. The political, social, and economic structure of the regions changed as the colonialists made a play at the regionsââ¬â¢ economic well-being. Africa was rich in raw materials and minerals, and the colonialists used these to enrich the mother countries. Labor was found from the local people, and it came cheap. The family structure was changed drastically as able-bodied men were shipped away to work for their colonial masters, hence; changing the social structure. The political structure became that of the colonialists, and many of the structures being seen today are still from the colonial era. Local and traditional heads were done away with

Traditional Budgeting and Budgetary Controls Weaknesses
Traditional Budgeting and Budgetary Controls Weaknesses This answer briefs the practice of budgets in two entirely different businesses; one in a very stable and static market place and the other in a very dynamic, rapidly changing, innovative environment. Budgeting and budgetary control is commonly used in a traditional manner by most business entities in the world in spite of its manifold limitations. In a fast changing business environment, traditional budgeting need not be the only budgeting approach to be exercised in a company. There are quite a few alternatives like Zero-Based Budgeting, Beyond budgeting, Activity-Based Budgeting, etc. which are much beneficial and rewarding for a business entity. Budget A budget is a plan, expressed in financial and/or more generally quantitative terms, which extends forward for a period into the future (Gowthorpe, 2003) . A traditional budget is usually prepared by reviewing past years budget and actual expenses, with addition or deduction towards extra business activities or reduced business activities planned and also by effecting changes towards changing factors, such as growth, inflation etc It is basically to tie managers to predetermined actions in order to achieve the planned budget. It is usually based on organizational hierarchy and centralized leadership . Benefits of traditional budgeting and budgetary controls are :- Income of budget period can be matched against budget period expenses to know whether operations will result in profit and how much profit. Actual performance can be compared with budget to know variances so that corrective actions can be taken. Budget based reports facilitates assessment of costs of goods and services provided and accomplishments of the business entity. Problems associated with traditional budgeting and budgetary controls are :- It is futile to predict what will happen in the next 12 months Serven (cited in Banham, 2000) argued, The customary system of trying to accurately predict what will happen in 12 months and budgeting accordingly is an exercise in futility. Most budgetary processes are costly and inefficient. It takes a long time to complete and by the time it is completed, it becomes no longer applicable as business environment has changed. According to Stewart (2004), there are ten reasons why budget cause problem, as shown below. Though traditional budgeting have many weaknesses, but most companies still rely on it because of its unchallenged position in the top division of accepted management practices (Hope Fraser, 1999). Therefore many companies now seek to find alternatives of traditional budgeting, even some attempt to abandon it. However, it is widely delieved by analysts that as many as half the companies that attempt the overhaul become so exhausted they give up and go back to traditional approach (Banham, 2000). Traditional Budgeting in Dynamic Business In a business that operates in a very dynamic, rapidly changing, and innovative environment, traditional budgeting is inappropriate to exercise. Budget is a barrier for the business because the vibrant market demands flexibility, fast response, innovation, process improvement, customer focus, and shareholder value (Daum, 2001). And it is the limitation of the traditional budgeting not to be able to fulfil these demands. The dynamic driven business should keep up with the change and adaptive to recent development to achieve success. Hence Beyond Budgeting approach introduced. Daum (2001) argued that, The Beyond Budgeting Model is designed to overcome traditional barriers and to create a flexible, adaptable organization that gives your local managers the self-confidence and freedom to think differently, make decisions rapidly, and collaborate on innovative projects with colleagues in multifunctional teams both within your company and across its borders. Exercising beyond budgeting may have become the turnaround for many companies of their budgeting problems. Beyond budgeting is about a performance management system, made up of a series of interdependent and interlocking process (Verlag, 2005). The objective is to create an adaptive system to the real world that ideally develops the business plan from the environment, i.e. growth of markets, performance of competitors, etc. Then, instead of trying to meet a negotiated number in the budget, business should try to beat this performance standard (Verlag, 2005). Thus it would not make managers feel undervalued. The process of beyond budgeting is portrayed in 12 principles of Beyond Budgeting (BBRT, 2005). The first six process principles is concerning performance management systems that allows employees to response faster to customer needs and competitive environment. The second six leadership principles provide a decentralization framework of responsibility to employees to facilitate them adapting quickly to potential events and improves their relative performance. Beyond budgeting can be exercised successfully by applying these principles and the business can be adaptive to the rapidly changing environment. 12 principles of Beyond Budgeting Beyond Budgeting Process Principles Targets Set aspirational goals based on continuous relative improvement not fixed targets Rewards Base rewards on relative performance with hindsight not on meeting fixed targets Planning Make planning an inclusive and continuous process not an annual event Resources Make resources available on demand not through annual budget allocations Coordination Coordinate cross company actions dynamically not though annual plans and budgets Controls Base controls on KPIs, trends and relative indicators not variances against plan Beyond Budgeting Leadership Principles Governance Base governance on clear values and boundaries not on detailed rules and budgets Performance Build a high performance culture based on relative success not on meeting targets Freedom to act Devolve decision making authority to frontline teams dont micro-manage them Accountability Create a network of small units accountable for results not centralized hierarchies Customer focus Focus everyone on improving customer outcomes not on meeting internal targets Information Promote open and shared information dont restrict it to those who need to know The benefits of beyond budgeting is it will examine targets, strategies, action plans, forecasts and management reports. Comparisons might also be made against competitors and past-year performance. It will concentrate on the key drivers of business performance. The purpose is to be alert and take advantage of new opportunities and respond to potential threats by using an advanced information system to make decisions early. Speed of action and good decisions are the result of beyond budgeting. (Hope Fraser, 1999) The major change required by beyond budgeting will raise some resistance to change (Verlag, 2005). Organisations will differ in scale, culture and business context. It would be challenging to demonstrate to key stakeholders that control can still be achieved without a budget (Max, 2005). Beyond budgeting may raise issues such as doubt of loosening control, giving front-line people decision-making authority, and trusting people to act in the best interest of the business that is not easy change to contemplate (Hope Fraser, 1999). However if these issues can be handled, the business may gain success in long term. For example, the companies that have successfully practised beyond budgeting and abandoned the traditional budgeting system are Volvo (one of Europes most profitable car manufacturers), IKEA (the worlds largest furniture manufacturer and retailer), etc. (Hope Fraser, 1999). Many organizations that have gone beyond budgeting found that their performance has improved once the budgeting process was abandoned in favour of more relative and adaptive means of planning, evaluating performance and control (Stewart, 2004). Activity-Based Budgeting (ABB). Although beyond budgeting is the most updated method, but not all companies can adapt to it. Thus the other alternative for the dynamic driven business is Activity-Based Budgeting (ABB). It aims to generate a budget from activities and resources of the company . A financial budget is prepared after preparation of an operationally feasible budget. Advantages of ABB approach. It facilitates better product, process, or activity costing and decision making, and better resource allocation to support organizational priorities. It identifies capacity issues and makes adjustment earlier in the budgeting process than under traditional budgeting which does not track resource consumption patterns. It enriches managers ability to respond to contingencies and also improves performance measurement, evaluation, and decision making (Hansen, Otley, et all., 2003). Thus, ABB can be a proper alternative for the dynamic company since it will provide more accurate analysis to quickly forecast the next budget compared to the traditional budgeting. However, ABB is not without problems. According to Barret (2003), ABB can be difficult to understand about the rules relating outputs to resources and costs. Consequently business managers tend to be doubtful of the approach. Although ABB directly relates increase in the volume of an output with increases in certain activities, it does not help in linking activities with resources. Thus any application of one of these alternatives, whether it is beyond budgeting or ABB, must be considered thoroughly subject to the business current condition. Traditional Budgeting in Static Business In a business that operates in a very stable and static market place, where there is slight change in either products or demand every year, traditional budgeting still can be appropriate (Daum, 2001). Static business would not need to take a risk to change their invariable budgetary plan as it would cost higher and consume more time than usual. However if this condition continuously persisted, the business will never develop more than its current position. It could lead to boredom for the employees who seek for challenge. As it is argued by Hope Fraser (1999), Budgets are well known for reinforcing the command and control culture, constraining freedom and autonomy, and stifling the very challenges that excite prospective managers. As an alternative to the static business, Zero-Based Budgeting (ZBB) is introduced. ZBB refers to proposals by Pyhrr (1973); Cheek (1977) et al. to modify the traditional budgeting process in organizations in which budgeting is an incremental process in relation to the prior years actual expenditures. The proposed ZBB process requires each manager to justify the budget request approximating the organizational functions were starting from ground zero. It entails clarifying the goals of an organizational unit as well as identifying the functions and projects it proposes to perform in order to achieve its goals. These activities are then ranked in order of importance (Flamholtz, 1983). Basically it is a systematic logical approach to allocate limited resources where they will be best used. Benefits of ZBB are cost saving, improving services, increase self-discipline in developing budget, reduce the entitlement mentality with respect to cost increases and make budget discussions more meaningful during review sessions (LaFaive, 2003). On the contrary ZBB also can cause problems for example, may increase the time and expense of preparing budget, may be too radical a solution for the task at hand, and can make matters worse if not conducted accordingly. Moreover a substantial commitment must be made by all sectors involved to ensure that the change is followed through (LaFaive, 2003). ZBB is recommended for the static businesses in order to improve performance. It can be useful for shaking up a process that may have grown stale and counterproductive over time (LaFaive, 2003). Variance analysis is still the most common tools to calculate the mismatch between the planned budget and the actual performance. Based on the survey by Sulaiman, Ahmad Alwi (2005), the common practice among local Japanese (about 71%) and local Malaysian companies (about 64%) is to investigate variances only when the variance exceeds a certain percentage. This is a typical characteristic of traditional budgeting. However it is inadequate to be used in today modern business. Thus Ramsey (1999) introduced diagnostic variance analysis, where budget variances are analysed in terms of the activity-based components that make up the variance, and evaluated in light of overall business performance. As a result of this analysis, the underlying cause of the variance is revealed, providing the necessary business insight to support strategic decisions. In conclusion, traditional approach cannot be abandoned completely. Budgeting is still very important in the company and need serious attention in the organization in spite of its complication (France, 2006). Zero-Based Budgeting and Activity-Based Budgeting are only improvement of traditional approach. In a dynamic driven business that evolve in rapidly changing environment like today modern business ambience, beyond budgeting can be the suitable alternative with proper handling in the organization. As for the static business, ZZB can assist the breakthrough in the organization so that the business will develop more and achieve success in the future.

Shakespeares Sonnet #73 Essay -- essays research papers fc
Shakespeare's Sonnet #73, published in 1609, is written in the Shakespearean or English sonnet style. It consists of three quatrains and one couplet at the end, written in iambic pentameters. Each quatrain has its own rhyme scheme, rhyming in alternating lines. The couplet summarizes the preceding twelve lines. Sonnet 73 appears to contain multiple parallels to death and the person speaking in the poem gives the impression that he is near death and reflecting back upon life. The first quatrain, ââ¬Å"That time of the year thou mayst behold me/ When yellow leaves, or none, or few do hang/ Upon those boughs which shake against the cold/ Bare ruin choirs where late the sweet bird sang.â⬠He seems to be comparing his life the unspecified season, which could either be autumn or winter. If a person were to look at only this quatrain, Shakespeare seems to describe autumn, with images of yellow leaves and a place where a bird sang. However, if the whole sonnet is looked at Shakespeare seems to describe the effects of winter. Shakespeare reinforces the confusion of season with the rearrangement of the natural sequence of events. He says, none before few in describing the leaves hanging, and reminds us of summer with the image of the bird. This serves as a reminder of the encroaching winter. The transposition of "none" and "few" could also imply that a second look to the landscape, as with death. Upon, another glance, death is not here bu t coming. This quatrain appears t...

Prop 8 Elephant in the room Essay
Prop 8 Elephant in the room Essay Prop 8: Elephant in the room Essay In response to the popular slogan: ââ¬Å"Say ââ¬Å"NOâ⬠to Prop Hate,â⬠and one random commenter that Iââ¬â¢m betting sounds familiar: ââ¬Å"Do any of you who HATE gays, and yes, thatââ¬â¢s the correct word, realize that gay marriage has been legal in CA for 4 months and has the world ended? Have all these horrible things happened? Has marriage been destroyedâ⬠¦ oh, no, it hasnââ¬â¢t. Weird, right? Get yourselves educated. We need to stop spreading the ignorance. Equality for all! And realize there are gay Christian people." There are plenty of people in my life who know I love them (well at least they know I donââ¬â¢t hate them,) but also know that I disagree with the choices they are making. They know where I stand because of my religious affiliations. I think the reason these people include me in their lives is because they know I can differentiate between them and those actions I donââ¬â¢t approve of. I love it that these people donââ¬â¢t rely on my approval of their every deed as basis for our friendship. (And vice versa.) I've noticed a commonality- maybe those associated with AA could define it better: people who choose to act on inappropriate feelings (addicts, sociopaths- people who can choose their actions vs. people with ticksâ⬠¦) have not only an interesting rationalization for their behavior, they also have the manipulative tactic of implying that, to the ignorant onlooker, there is no difference between actions and the people making the actions. I'll illustrate. A kleptomaniac steals something. I think thatââ¬â¢s bad. But they have convinced themselves, and many others, that the very desire they have to steal is evidence of itââ¬â¢s validity as acceptable behavior. And to top it off, they twist my words, and call my disdain for their behavior, hatred for them. Hereââ¬â¢s a point of disagreement between me and most people who have deviant sexual habits. A person who feels the need to steal, was born with that desire, and is only happy when stealing, canââ¬â¢t get away with it. Society wonââ¬â¢t let them. Not only that, but most feel the need to change their behavior to be acceptable to the majority of society and to God. They donââ¬â¢t want to be defined as kleptomaniacs. The only difference I see between people with destructive tendencies and people who call themselves gay, is that ââ¬Å"gay peopleâ⬠have numbed their consciences, and the conscienses of many others, to the point that many no longer feel the need to change their behavior to be acceptable to the majority of society and to God. Some have even convinced themselves that because they have these evil tendencies, God must have made them that way and wants them to act on those tendencies. God didnââ¬â¢t create a ââ¬Å"gay personâ⬠any more than he created a ââ¬Å"kleptomaniac.â⬠I've heard the argument that without sex with someone of the same gender, a gay person canââ¬â¢t experience love in their lives. Maybe sex isnââ¬â¢t what love is all about. Maybe denying evil tendencies (who doesnââ¬â¢t have them) is what life is about. I've heard stories of wonderful people who took their own lives because they couldn't live with their burdens. What have we been taught about burdens? What have we been taught about enduring to the end? When have we been taught to pray for God to take away these burdens fully expecting Him to grant our wish? Whatever happend to Thy will be done? If living with these particular tendencies is your lot in life- embrace them as your trials, and use them to make you stronger- like any of the carnal desires all of us have! Enough playing the victim card. So you are embarrassed. So you wish you were like everyone else. We are ALL embarrassed by our various less-than-righteous inclinations. We ALL have the tendency to look around and think everyone else has it easier. We also know Who has felt every last bit of pain and suffering we have felt, and have, every last one of us, been given the promise that we can feel joy by coming unto Him. Iââ¬â¢m going to be honest. I loved a guy who had no instincts to kiss me, and

Picasso's Influence on Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons Essay
Picasso's Influence on Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons - Essay Example The essay "Picasso's Influence on Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons" analyzes Pablo Picasso, cubism and how they influenced on Gertrude Stein's "Tender Buttons". A painting may be a true art but a chair to sit on is an artistic element. Art which has less functional values is called fine arts while the objects which serve the functional purpose are called craft. At one time period art has been considered to primarily depict the ideas of truth and beauty. Art when used to convey beauty has also helped in creating awareness in people, has helped them to fight for their right, has shown them where the world is heading and how to make it a better place for our next generation. Hence art has been used to convey meaning and is not just used for pleasure. Awareness and enthusiasm has been created in people through various forms of art. It could be poetry, painting, a novel, a song, a sculpture, an act of drama; art can be of any form and can convey meaning in anyway though its should be under stood, then only it has its worth and serves its purpose. Picasso and Gertrude are one of those who has served the people through their work. Both these artists had interest in cubism; Picasso used it in his paintings while Stein had used it in her writings. During 1909 and 1919 Picasso along with Braque developed Analytic Cubism and Synthetic Cubism. Analytic Cubism is a style of painting using monochrome brownish colors while Synthetic Cubism is a development of Cubism in which pieces of newspaper are pasted into the composition.... severe poverty where he had to burn of his work to provide warmth to himself and he had also seen high times when his work had become famous after he had started signing his work with only 'Picasso' rather than 'Pablo Ruiz y Picasso'. During the time he was famous he had attend dinners and parties with rich and elite class people and have had many women in his life. During 1909 and 1919 Picasso along with Braque developed Analytic Cubism and Synthetic Cubism. Analytic Cubism is a style of painting using monochrome brownish colors while Synthetic Cubism is a development of Cubism in which pieces of newspaper or wallpaper are pasted into the composition making use of collage in fine art. During the First and Second World War and Spanish Civil War Picasso remained neutral but he supported the idea through his paintings. During the Spanish Civil War, Picasso living abroad had voluntarily participated by expressing his anger and condemnation of Franco and Fascists through his work. He supported the Catalan independence movement and became a member of the Communist Party. Picasso became a loyal member of French Communist Party in 1944 and attended an international peace conference in Poland. In 1950 he received a Stalin Peace Prize from the government and the Stalin portrait depicted that his interest in the communist politics had become low though he remained a faithful member of the communist party until his death. [2] Cubism Cubism is a twentieth century art movement that has changed the European painting; it was very significant in France during 1907 and 1914. It has been founded by both Picasso and Braque. The artist depicts the subject from many sides and shows a greater context while cubist artworks include broken up objects which are analyzed and re-arranged.

Professional Development of Nursing Professionals Essay
Professional Development of Nursing Professionals - Essay Example It suggests understanding a nurse as an important part of the whole system whose education, wit, strong leadership and interpersonal skills make her an equal partner with other health care professionals. The Impact of the IOM Report on Nursing Education The need to improve nursing education is one of the focal points discussed in the IOM Report. Specifically, the Report determines that an improved system of education is an obligatory foundation of nursesââ¬â¢ educational achievements. The latter have been defined as ââ¬Å"seamless academic progressionâ⬠. To illustrate: ââ¬Å"Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression.â⬠(The IOM Report, 2011, Transforming Education) For this, key areas of change have been defined. These are 1) suggested improvements in the system of nursing education; 2) general upgrade of the level of nursing education to a baccalaureate degree (BSN); 3 ) emphasis on lifelong learning opportunities; 4) managing the transition of graduate nurses from school to practice through various programs. The Report stresses the need to improve the ways in which modern nurses are educated. Due to the complex character of patient needs and healthcare environments, a number of competencies that nurses need to attain has grown of late. The following competencies are called crucial for providing high-quality care: leadership skills, knowledge of health policy, methods of improving systems, skills of teamwork and close collaboration, skills of working within a community, evidence-based, as well as research practice, etc. Respectively, the need to upgrade the existing standards of the nursing profession has been stated firmly. To be more specific, the Report recognizes the growing demand for nurses with a BSN degree. This will expectedly help achieve ââ¬Å"a more educated workforceâ⬠in the nursing area (The IOM Report, 2011, Transforming Educ ation). For this purpose, a few models/programs are suggested that will help increase the number of nurses with a baccalaureate degree. Furthermore, the Report has established the need for nursesââ¬â¢ lifelong education and suggested ways of providing enough opportunities for this. To illustrate, ââ¬Å"Nursing education should serve as a platform for continued lifelong learning and should include opportunities for seamless transition to higher degree programsâ⬠(The IOM Report, 2011, Transforming Education). These opportunities are represented by various bridge programs, such as LPN-to-BSN, ADN-to-MSN, and ADN-to-BSN. Finally, the Report has determined that managing the transition of graduate nurses from school to practice through various programs should be a priority. This will help decrease high turnover rates in hospitals, as well as nursing homes, and stabilize this workforce in the country. The Impact of the IOM Report on Nursing Practice The impact of the IOM Report o n nursing practice is evident, first of all, in the area of primary care. Apart from this, the need of the overall improvement of nursing care quality has been stated. Importantly, ways of redesigning roles for nurses and methods of overcoming barriers for improved practice have been outlined. As for primary care, this area has been established as lacking in nurse practitioners. However, medical students should be encouraged to enter this specialty since it is expected that ââ¬Å"as access to coverage, service settings, and services increases under the
